Clapping My Hands (From the Front to the Back) • Gross Motor Activity

CLAPPING MY HANDS • MR. MATTY’S WORLD ORIGINAL

This is an activity that eventually turned into a song that I made up to play with the 2-5 year old kids during recess or circle time to get those wiggly arms moving and those growing brains working. It’s so much fun watching the kids try and connect their hands in the back. Giggles and laughs are usually present during the activity. It reminds me of a Chi Gong exercise that helps promote circulation, flexibility and range of motion.

Gross motor activity benefits young and old whether it’s developing new abilities or conditioning and strengthening. It also is linked to healthy brain development in children. (https://www.naeyc.org/resources/pubs/yc/nov2016/learning-to-move) Natural movements and exercise should be a part of not only a grownups daily routine, but our children’s as well. I think when asked “what is the appropriate amount of time for play and exercise?” my reply would have to be, “how much time do you have?”
